He is the project leader of ongoing modelling for the search for new active materials for redox flow batteries.

Prof. Dr. Jürgen Schumacher studied physics at the Universities of Frankfurt and Freiburg. He received his Ph.D. in Physics from the University of Konstanz in 2000, with the topic "Numerical simulation of silicon solar cells with novel cell structures", carried out in close collaboration with the Fraunhofer ISE.  After that, he worked as a project leader on portable fuel cells for the power supply of electronic devices resarch at Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems and as a team leader in Fuel Cell Simulation. Since 2011, he is a professor at Zurich University and a team leader in Electrochemical Cells and Energy Systems. His research focuses on Proton exchange membrane fuel cells; Redox flow batteries; Photovoltaics; Multiphysics modelling and simulation.
